You might have run into the term “Windows Casino” while navigating online in gambling related content. No, Microsoft hasn’t decided yet to expand its business into online gambling. Windows Casino is the name of one of the oldest and more notorious online casinos around. The owner of Windows Casino has recently changed hands and it is now a part of the Wager Junction family which owns several reputable online casinos.
However the main subject of this article is not specifically Windows Casino but the fact that all online casino software runs exclusively on Microsoft’s Windows operating system. This has noting to with Microsoft signing an exclusive contract with online gambling sites but simply because Windows is the most popular operating systems around.
Are people not running Windows unable to play at online casinos? Not exactly. Almost all of the major online casinos offer a second client for the software besides the regular downloaded one. This is usually a flash or Java version of the software. These versions started appearing online because the casinos wanted to offer customers almost instant access to the games for those who are not patient enough to wait for the download to complete or for those who feared installing the software on their computer.
Because both Java and Flash technologies are available on almost all platforms, especially Linux and the Mac which are the next most popular operating systems after Windows, the availability of these versions actually solves the problem of the non existing casino software for those platforms.
Although this solution is better than nothing, it is not perfect. The no download version of the casino software tends to lack some features of the full downloaded version. A little less quality in graphics and sound is one thing. However the main issue is games availability since these versions offer much less selection in online casino games than the downloaded Windows version.
We can only hope that as the online casino industry continues its massive growth, a pioneer will arise that offers either a Linux or Mac version of their online casino software. For the time being will have to be satisfied with no download casinos.
