The superstitious gambler Tuesday, Jul 27 2010

There is no other type of person more prone to superstitions than gamblers. This is especially obvious in games where players have little to no control over the outcome of the game like slots, craps and roulette.

Those superstitions are as old as the games themselves, have always existed, and will always remain, as they are next to impossible to root out, no matter what kind of reasoning is applied. Over the years many of those superstitions have transformed into habits, here is an overview of the most common ones:

Superstitions playing craps

While throwing the dice, it sometimes happens that the die falls off the craps table. Many players consider this to be an omen of bad luck. In order to break the spell, a player, who wishes to continue the game with those dice, must shout “same dice”, or finish the game with a new set of dice producing rolls that will make them lose.

Many gamblers playing craps believe that shouting or whispering seven is sufficient to roll this magic number. A variation on this is when a player believes it is bad luck to say seven, and so shouts “big red” instead to invoke the seven.

Passing the dice from one hand to the other is also considered bad luck, and a practice forbidden at many casinos. The reason for outlawing this, has nothing to do with superstition though, it is simply a measure to prevent cheaters from slipping in dice that are tampered with.

Superstitions in Roulette

The most well known superstition while playing Roulette is the belief in trends. For example, when several times in a row red has fallen, a pattern seems to be emerging. Of course Roulette is a random game of chance, so to believe in a trend emerging during a game of roulette is simply superstition. For Roulette at casinos, the land based casinos as well as online casinos; past results have no effect on future ones.

Many gamblers playing Roulette will bet on what they perceive to be their “lucky numbers”, in the belief that betting on those numbers will increase their chances of winning. The reality is the same one as with the trends superstition. No number is more or less likely to come up than any other during a game of Roulette, it is merely a game of chance and there are no such things as lucky numbers, for any player. All gamblers playing Roulette has exactly the same chances of winning as any other player in the game.

While it is easy to “debunk” the myths surrounding those casino games, the belief in superstitions as described, remains, and players holding on to that belief are as stubborn in their ways as can be. There is no rhyme or reason to their beliefs, they just need something to cling to, which makes them believe they can exercise some control over the outcome of the game, and as long as there is this need for control, there will always be superstition in playing the popular casino games.

The Future of Gambling Monday, Jul 5 2010

Over the last two decades of gambling on the Internet, online gambling has matured and evolved and has become much more technologically advanced, it has also grown significantly in terms of popularity.

As the technology matures, the industry became more transpired, and with shifts in social conduct online gambling has become a more and more accepted phenomena, which attracts an ever growing and steady base of players from all areas. Amateurs and seasoned veterans are playing the popular casino games on the web.

Despite many forces acting against it, the gambling industry has displayed an enormous resilience with stabile growth showing month after month, even during a worldwide economical recession.

With so many changes in a mere two decades, what will the future hold for online gambling? While nobody has a crystal ball through which the future can be predicted, it is possible to speculate on how online gambling will be enjoyed, say 20 years from now.

Gaming software

This part is the easiest to predict as it is very likely that the technological evolution and development of online gaming will simply continue, so it is safe to assume graphics will continue to look more realistic than ever before, or that we can even imagine at this point in time. Possibly real photographs can be scanned or uploaded by players, which can be applied to create 3D avatars that can be used to be seated at virtual tables, and touch screens and voice control will have replaced most of the traditional keyboards. It is also very likely that user interaction in the games will improve significantly.

Casino Games

Classic casino games will never die, but we can imagine a whole range of new sophisticated games being added to the already large assortment of the average online casino. We will see the rise in number of games specifically designed to target certain audiences. It is also likely that we will see a split between online casinos offering thousands of casino games, and online casinos offering very specific games targeted towards a select audience in that niche.

Legislation

It is likely that most bans on gambling will be overthrown as the revenues gained from taxes are bound to outweigh the moral objections that there may be. Even now we see the social climate shifting towards acceptance rather than outlawing online gambling and it is expected that this trend will continue in the years to come.

Land based casinos

In the coming decades most likely we will see many land based casinos close up shop, making way for large resorts, that are and always will be a popular holiday destination, as the focus of casino operators will more and more shift to online gambling, where regular casino establishments are concerned.

The land based casinos themselves will be digital, with video slots and a whole range of centrally managed games, which can be adjusted by the casino staff with just a few clicks or touches on a touch screen.

With the upcoming uses of 3D technology as can be seen at popular gaming console manufacturers like Sony and Microsoft, this technology will also break through at land based casinos where a host of incredible 3D games will be put in place, along with multiplayer features connecting players at the casino with players online.

In short it is very likely the boundaries between online and offline casinos will blur more and more in an environment where gambling is a socially accepted phenomena, where legislation is put in place to support it rather than to combat gambling.
